The Mystery Package

Every Christmas for the past two decades, a mysterious package has appeared on the doorstep of Inger and Arne Sandnes in Valldal, Norway. It’s filled with gifts for the entire family, always with the same handwritten note: “Merry Christmas from all of us in Arendal.” Despite years of family investigation, media coverage, and wild speculations, the sender has never been identified. Until now. This Christmas, grandchildren Edle (9) and Brage (6) take matters into their own hands. With their father Magnus, one of the original recipients, and their mother Silje, a documentary filmmaker, they set out to solve the family’s greatest holiday mystery before Christmas Eve. Armed with a tape recorder, notebooks, and real detective gear, the siblings establish headquarters in their grandparents’ attic. They interrogate relatives, analyze old tags, and inspect years of strange gifts: batik pants, knives, funny books, and Arendal-branded t-shirts. Are these random objects, or carefully planted clues? Is the sender a family member, a prankster, or a kind stranger? Their investigation takes them from snowy Valldal to the coastal town of Arendal, where they hand out missing person posters, confront suspects and knock on stranger’s doors, they even get to question Santa himself. But what begins as a playful search takes a deeper turn. The first package arrived the year Magnus’s older brother, Hans Petter, died by suicide at 19. Through the children’s eyes, the mystery becomes both a search into family memory and toward the uncle they never meet. The Mystery Package is a heartfelt, humorous, and suspenseful story about childhood curiosity, Christmas traditions, family bonds, and the greatest mystery of all, life itself, with all its surprises.
