How did a crazy invention change the world and the lives of women in a small town in the restless 1960s?

Info

CARMEN CURLERS is inspired by actual events and takes off in 1963, when the entrepreneur Axel stumbles upon an invention: The electric curler. A revolutionary invention with a potential to liberate women with an easy, quick, and cheap way to get curly hair in just 10 minutes instead of spending hours at the hair salon. The 60s in Denmark was characterized by a booming economy, and the growing consumption of American products like the dishwasher, the washing machine, and disposable diapers liberated housewives all over the country, who suddenly had more time on their hands. Time to earn their own money. These women, for the first time, experience the joy and the challenges of making their own money, along with freedom, new friendships, and divorces. To most of them, working at Carmen Curlers becomes their new identity, forcing them to decide who they are and who they really want to be. From being two employees in 1963, working out of Axel’s basement, Carmen Curlers grew into a worldwide success with a staff of 3,500 people in 1969, operating round the clock in a huge factory building with a helipad, a private kindergarten, and even their own fire station. The adventure ends abruptly in 1969 however, when Axel is under pressure from the American cosmetics corporation Clairol, who buys the company. The series spans over three seasons taking place from 1963 to 1969. Season 1 focuses on the beginning of the Carmen Curler adventure and Axel and Birthe’s promising partnership.
